An Assistive Listening Device (ALD) is any device that helps you overcome your hearing loss. Usually the term ALD is applied to personal devices that transmit, process, or amplify sound, but it's usually not used to refer to hearing aids. The term may also refer to alerting devices such as amplified alarm clock, smoke detector, baby monitor, door bell or an amplified telephone.
ALDs bring distant sounds directly into your ear and can reduce background noise. Some people incorrectly believe that ALDs are only for people with very serious hearing losses. It’s true that ALDs can be a big help for them, but it’s also true that ALDs can help people with milder losses … even people who don’t wear a hearing aid.
Many public accommodations such as theaters, movies, auditoriums, banks and churches will have ALDs to loan to patrons.
ALDs can be used without a hearing aid with the “user interface” being a headphone, or earbuds, but they are especially effective when used with hearing aids.

Telecoil ALDs
(Built into the hearing aid or through remote access)
A Telecoil or also referred to as a “t-switch” or “t-coil” is a feature available on certain models of hearing aids, it will induce an electric current in a coil when it’s in the presence of a changing magnetic field.
A telecoil, can therefore, be an alternate or supplemental input device for a hearing aid.
Normally, a hearing aid “listens” with its microphone, then amplifies what it “hears”. But with a telecoil used as the input source instead of the microphone, the hearing aid can “hear” a magnetic signal which represents sound.
On telecoil-equipped hearing aids, the wearer must “turn on” or “switch to” telecoil mode by moving a small switch (on older models) to the “T” position, or by changing to a program mode (by pressing a button on the ear-level device or on a remote control) that is set up to use the telecoil.
Many public accommodations such as movie theaters, theaters, auditoriums, sports stadiums, banks and churches provide Assistive Listening Systems (ALDs), which may include headsets or receivers loaned to patrons to help them hear. Many of these are hearing aid compatible, so if you have a telecoil equipped hearing aid, then you can hear the magnetic signal-many times you can hear better than you would with an acoustic signal.

Now you don’t have to. Just put your RS 5200 earphones on and choose the volume that’s best for you. Others in the room can still set the volume on the TV just like before. And all you hear is clear, vibrant, Sennheiser sound. Everyone’s happy — and you can enjoy watching TV together again.
Even more + for TV listening comfort
The RS 5200 is new and improved. Several styles and sizes of switchable ear tip adapters are now provided for perfect fit and performance. Whether you prefer a more open listening experience (you can still hear other sounds around you) or greater insulation from ambient noise, you can tailor the RS 5200 to sound just the way you like it. Our engineers have also enhanced the flexibility of the stethoscope-style earphones. They’re even more comfortable to wear now and insulate against noise from motion. And of course, you can still set the volume control separately for your left and right ears — new, more responsive volume buttons make it easier than ever.
Freedom is always a +
The wireless receiver gives you up to 70 meters of range — no need to sit close to the TV set or wrestle with annoying cables. Get up and grab a snack from the kitchen — and keep listening without hitting pause. The RS 5200 connects to both digital and analog outputs, making it compatible with practically any TV. And unlike conventional headphones, these stethoscope-style earphones don’t interfere with your glasses or hair.
